Tradition Passe’ or Here to Stay?

Guest Books 101

Undoubtedly, you have flipped through hundreds of Bridal catalogs and you have seen all of the wedding day accessories, from the Traditional…to the Avant Garde. Today, more and more brides are hoping to make their special day even more so, by tapping into their personal style. A great deal of thought and energy has gone into your planning. Perhaps you are mixing a bit of the new with the old? Savoring some of the long standing traditions, while enhancing the not-so-special aspects with something creative? So what does this say about your Guest Book? How can a wedding day staple, steeped in such tradition, make its move from the dusty upper shelves of your bookcase, to a statement piece to be showcased for years to come? Let me count the ways!

From quilts, to picnic benches, guitars, and poster sized photos of the newlywed couple; guests are being asked to sign anything. Some alternative options to signing a guest book include the photo booth scrap book, where guests not only sign their names, but also leave you a fun (or just plain funny) photo of them from the evening. The more elaborate version of this trend is the iPad video guest book.

There are a myriad of unique, and guest interactive alternatives to the standard guest book. Not only will you have the names of who was there to share your special day, but you will also have a one of a kind piece of memorabilia that will become a permanent fixture in your lives forever. Popular sites like Pinterest and Etsy have hundreds of DIY Kits to choose from, and we’ve posted a few of our current favorite options below.

Yes, more decisions to make! However, once you’ve decided on the perfect idea for your perfect day, the rest is cake. Oh, yes…cake!! No worries, that’s another topic for another day.

Hints: Opt for colors that match your décor preference, and choose 3 or 4 shades to add depth to the final piece. Be sure to provide quality fine tip pens for your guests to sign their names, as well as a pack of wet hand wipes for guests to clean their inky fingers off.

Hints: Take your Mr. or Mrs. ‘to-be’ and hunt for rocks together! A great way for both of you to be involved, and it makes for a fun day at the beach. Paint them with acrylic paint first if you want to keep with your color scheme, or leave them as is, and enjoy the natural beauty.

“I Wonder Who We’re Sitting with?” …Seating Charts 101

Congratulations! You did it!

After months and months of planning, your big day is finally here!!
You have been meticulous over every detail, and today it all pays off.
From you ‘save the date’ cards, to the invitations, the venue, the flowers, the dress, and the all important seating chart…
You did provide your venue with the seating chart, right? Surely you weren’t going to risk sitting your second cousin near your great aunt – after all, they haven’t spoke in years, and your wedding day is hardly a candidate for the sacrificial ice breaker. Similarly, being mindful of blatant opposite personalities is helpful in your seating plans. For some, the task of mapping out where each guest sits may seem tedious; however, it is an invaluable step in a well thought out reception. While there will be no shortage of well intended input, this may be the time to look into the numerous free programs available to assist you with the logistics.
Start with the obvious. Then, using your knowledge of your guests, as well as some good old fashion common sense, you will soon see tables full of smiling faces, genuine laughter and warm toasts. Perfect!
Now that you’ve gone through the hard work of preparing the perfect seating chart, you might consider providing your guests with a well appointed display of the final arrangement. This visual confirmation of your guests seating can help eliminate confusion prior to their entering the reception, as well as add another personal touch to the venue. You can find ideas for Seating Chart Displays on sites like Pinterest, and we’ve added a few of our recent faves below, or consult with your contact person at your venue for suggestions.
Happy Wedding Day!!!chalk

Why have a “First Look”?

Lots of couples are opting out of the tradition of not seeing each other before the wedding and taking advantage of ‘first look’ photos, a rising trend in modern wedding days.

This gives the photographer a better chance to capture your special moment when couples see each other for the first time in their wedding attire. It can also give family and close friends an intimate moment with the couple and more chances for photo ops, this saves time between the ceremony and the reception and you can join your guests at cocktail hour! It also can take the jitters away with seeing each other before the official “I Do’s”.

If you feel strongly about seeing each other before the wedding, it’s entirely up to you, however, it is YOUR day! Don’t be afraid to break the mold of traditional wedding rules and celebrate the magic and romance of that “first look.”

Pros and Cons of Being Married in Each Season

Before you go picking your venue, wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses, and decorations, you and your fiancé need to pick a date.  It’s not always that easy of a decision.  Weddings and traditions have been changing so much over the past couple years that what was thought to be crazy before, is now becoming expected!   You could come up with so many creative themes to fit either season. Below are some pros and cons of each season to consider before

Winter:  (Dec. Jan. Feb.)

PROS:  The winter months tend to be a lot cheaper than the rest of the year because these months are in less demand; therefore, it is easier finding wedding vendors like photographers, videographers, and DJ. The vendor’s prices will also be a lot less then in peak months.  Many venues have beautiful fireplaces but would be inappropriate to light up doing summer or other hot months.  Winter couples can fully benefit from the cozy décor such as fireplaces, candles, and the whole winter wonderland theme! Winter itself has a very romantic feel, so why not bring some of that wintery charm into your venue!  Your photographer will snap stunning pictures with the wintery scene as a backdrop. You can also take advantage of shorter days, which means you can hold your ceremony and reception earlier in the day and party longer into the night.

CONS: The main con of winter season is the bad traveling conditions. The awful weather conditions could affect driving time, flights could be delayed or canceled, or worse; your wedding might have to be canceled.  Because of the weather, you might not be able to get the exact flowers you want.  An obvious con is staying warm can be tricky.  You, your fiancé, the whole bridal party, and guests want to get dressed up, and that normally doesn’t include bulky coats, scarves, hats, and gloves.  Even worse, if your venue doesn’t offer a complementary coat check, it’ll be extra costs for you. Something else to keep in mind is all the holiday chaos surrounding your potential date.

Spring: (March, April, May)

PROS:  These months have the ideal temperatures, depending slightly on where you live.  You have your choice from an inside venue or an outdoor space.  You also have many more options to choose from for floral arrangements.  The chef will be able to prepare a wider variety of fresh vegetables and fruit for your dinner courses. Almost any theme fits into this time of year without feeling out of place.

CONS: These months are huge allergy times for most people, so you might want to offer your guests some tissues, especially if any part of your wedding is going to be outside.  May is one of the peak months which mean peak price.  The weather, especially if you live in New Jersey, is still very unpredictable.  In March, one day it could be snowing, and the next day it could be 75 degree outside. So if you do decide to do tie the knot during this month, it’s best to have some back up plans if any part of your day is outside.

Summer:  (June, July, Aug)

PROS:  During the summer months, again, depending on where you live, the weather is a lot more predictable and traveling is easier for your guests. You can be more confident in holding an outdoor wedding without stressing too much about a backup plan.  These tend to be the calmest months for people with busy schedules compared to the rest of the year so finding availability for guests should be easier.  Unlike the winter months, the selections of flowers for floral arrangements are much larger during this season. You’re able to incorporate your colors and your favorite flowers more so now than any other time during the year.  You also have your choice between inside or outside venue spaces.

CONS:  June is part of wedding peak season so weddings are common and vendors will book up very quickly.  If you’ve decided on a peak season wedding, its best to reserve your venue at least a year or more in advance, especially if you want a Saturday.  If you are planning on doing an outdoor wedding, make sure you set room in your budget for a tent to give your guests some shade from the hot sun.  If you have a lot of guests traveling far distances and need to stay a night or two, hotel rates tend to be higher because most people do they’re traveling during the summertime.

Fall: (Sept. Oct. Nov)

PROS: Fall is a beautiful time to get married because of all the changing leaves, beautiful colors, and weather.  You and your photographer can create some stunning pictures during this time of year.  You are still able to have your choice of an indoor or outdoor wedding.

CONS:  September and October are peak wedding season months so prices will be on the higher side for most venues and vendors.  Your guests’ availability might be shorter because everyone is going back to school and work.  They probably used a chunk of their vacation days during summer and are low on cash so if you do plan on having a fall wedding make sure you give guests a little extra notice so they can plan and save.

As you can see, the season you choice all depends on your own particular taste, your vision for the wedding, and your budget. Happy wedding planning!
