Undoubtedly, you have flipped through hundreds of Bridal catalogs and you have seen all of the wedding day accessories, from the Traditional…to the Avant Garde. Today, more and more brides are hoping to make their special day even more so, by tapping into their personal style. A great deal of thought and energy has gone into your planning. Perhaps you are mixing a bit of the new with the old? Savoring some of the long standing traditions, while enhancing the not-so-special aspects with something creative? So what does this say about your Guest Book? How can a wedding day staple, steeped in such tradition, make its move from the dusty upper shelves of your bookcase, to a statement piece to be showcased for years to come? Let me count the ways!

From quilts, to picnic benches, guitars, and poster sized photos of the newlywed couple; guests are being asked to sign anything. Some alternative options to signing a guest book include the photo booth scrap book, where guests not only sign their names, but also leave you a fun (or just plain funny) photo of them from the evening. The more elaborate version of this trend is the iPad video guest book.

There are a myriad of unique, and guest interactive alternatives to the standard guest book. Not only will you have the names of who was there to share your special day, but you will also have a one of a kind piece of memorabilia that will become a permanent fixture in your lives forever. Popular sites like Pinterest and Etsy have hundreds of DIY Kits to choose from, and we’ve posted a few of our current favorite options below.

Yes, more decisions to make! However, once you’ve decided on the perfect idea for your perfect day, the rest is cake. Oh, yes…cake!! No worries, that’s another topic for another day.

Hints: Opt for colors that match your décor preference, and choose 3 or 4 shades to add depth to the final piece. Be sure to provide quality fine tip pens for your guests to sign their names, as well as a pack of wet hand wipes for guests to clean their inky fingers off.

Hints: Take your Mr. or Mrs. ‘to-be’ and hunt for rocks together! A great way for both of you to be involved, and it makes for a fun day at the beach. Paint them with acrylic paint first if you want to keep with your color scheme, or leave them as is, and enjoy the natural beauty.

Congratulations! You did it!

After months and months of planning, your big day is finally here!!
You have been meticulous over every detail, and today it all pays off.
From you ‘save the date’ cards, to the invitations, the venue, the flowers, the dress, and the all important seating chart…
You did provide your venue with the seating chart, right? Surely you weren’t going to risk sitting your second cousin near your great aunt – after all, they haven’t spoke in years, and your wedding day is hardly a candidate for the sacrificial ice breaker. Similarly, being mindful of blatant opposite personalities is helpful in your seating plans. For some, the task of mapping out where each guest sits may seem tedious; however, it is an invaluable step in a well thought out reception. While there will be no shortage of well intended input, this may be the time to look into the numerous free programs available to assist you with the logistics.
Start with the obvious. Then, using your knowledge of your guests, as well as some good old fashion common sense, you will soon see tables full of smiling faces, genuine laughter and warm toasts. Perfect!
Now that you’ve gone through the hard work of preparing the perfect seating chart, you might consider providing your guests with a well appointed display of the final arrangement. Why have a “First Look”?

Lots of couples are opting out of the tradition of not seeing each other before the wedding and taking advantage of ‘first look’ photos, a rising trend in modern wedding days.

This gives the photographer a better chance to capture your special moment when couples see each other for the first time in their wedding attire. It can also give family and close friends an intimate moment with the couple and more chances for photo ops, this saves time between the ceremony and the reception and you can join your guests at cocktail hour! It also can take the jitters away with seeing each other before the official “I Do’s”.

If you feel strongly about seeing each other before the wedding, it’s entirely up to you, however, it is YOUR day! Don’t be afraid to break the mold of traditional wedding rules and celebrate the magic and romance of that “first look.”

How to Budget Your Wedding

       This is one of the most dreaded topics of wedding planning…the budget. It is also an important topic when beginning to shop for venues and vendors. Finding your dream venue and perfect DJ is great but lets be honest, the price can be a make or break. So before you start planning too far and fall in love with an idea that’s just too expensive, you better know what your budget is.  How do you know where to start? How much is enough? Who is helping out? If you’re not aware of what you’re spending, it can easily add up quickly.

Your wedding day should be a beautiful and amazing day, but not at the cost of putting stress on your new marriage. It is still possible to create the vision for your beautiful wedding on whatever your budget may be; you might just have to skip having Swarovski crystals all over the place.

After you’ve figured out how much your relatives are chipping in and how much you and your fiance can comfortably afford, these percentages below will help you figure out how much you have to spend for each part of your wedding.


Reception 45-50%

The honeymoon is usually not included in wedding budgeting but if you’re paying for it yourselves, it’s important not to forget about this expense as it’s what most couples look forward to after all this stressful time planning…a time to RELAX! The average amount spent on a honeymoon is $5,000 per couple depending on where and when.


A few money-saving tips:

-When the wedding planning begins, open up a new credit card, or dedicate an existing one to wedding items only.  This way you have an easy way to track your purchases.

-Find a venue that offers more than just the event space; like Clarks Landing Yacht Club! :)

-Make of a list of you and your fiancés actual must-haves and a list of wants. Budget in your must-haves and add in some wants according to what you have left.

-If you’re saving up for the wedding, find the best way to get the most interest on your savings via bank CD or through a money market.

-Consider the season/day of your event. The peak months for weddings are normally May, June, September, and October. If you’re trying to save some money, consider off-peak months! On the same note, Saturdays tend to be the more expensive day, so why not go for a Friday or Sunday wedding; which usually are more inexpensive.

-Forget a full bar.  You could save a bunch of money by only serving beer, wine, and a signature drink of your choice.
